Privacy Policy for Sunfall

This policy describes Sunfall's on-device planning and its use of Apple services. The weather section applies only to beta builds that include weather forecasts. It does not mean weather is available in the current public App Store version.

What Sunfall does not do

Sunfall has no user accounts, analytics, advertising, tracking or third-party SDKs. There is no Sunfall server. Place search, nearby place-name lookup where included, and forecasts in weather-enabled builds use Apple's services as described below.

Place search and offline planning

If you search for a place, the text you type is sent to Apple's location services to find matching places and their coordinates. This is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. Sun and moon calculations run on your device. Places you have already saved remain available for planning without a connection. New weather forecasts require internet access.

Location

Sunfall asks for location access to calculate sun and moon times for your current position. You can instead select a saved place or search for a place. You can change location permission in iOS Settings.

Solar and lunar calculations use coordinates on your device. In versions with a Current Location widget, iOS may also provide a location fix for local widget calculations when widget location access is allowed. The widget does not request weather.

In weather-enabled beta builds, requesting a forecast sends the selected coordinates, rounded to two decimal places, to Apple Weather. Rounded current-location coordinates can also remain in the local weather cache after the app closes, as described below.

Places you save

A saved place's name, coordinates and time zone are kept on your iPhone for later use. Versions with widgets also make saved places available locally to those widgets. Deleting a place removes it from the saved-place list. It does not necessarily remove a separate cached weather forecast for those coordinates.

Place names

Earlier public versions may send current coordinates to Apple's geocoding service to obtain a nearby place name. Beta builds with the nearby city or town label also send the current GPS coordinates supplied by iOS to Apple's geocoding service while the app is in the foreground. These coordinates are not rounded by Sunfall for this lookup. The returned name is a context label; calculations continue to use the GPS coordinates, not the city or town center. If no town name is available, coordinates remain visible.

The nearby-name cache holds up to eight lookup locations and results only in memory. Nearby fixes reuse cached results; successful results expire after a day. The cache is cleared when location permission is revoked or the app process ends. Beta builds without this label display current coordinates without this automatic lookup. Typed place search continues to use Apple's services.

Weather forecasts in beta builds

When Sunfall requests weather for your selected place, it sends that place's latitude and longitude, rounded to two decimal places, to Apple Weather through WeatherKit. If Current Location is selected, these are rounded coordinates derived from your device's location. If a saved place is selected, they are that place's rounded coordinates. Sunfall does not send the saved-place name in its weather request and does not route weather requests through a Sunfall server.

Sunfall saves forecasts and their attribution locally for up to eight places. The cache contains rounded coordinates, forecast readings, update and expiry times, attribution assets and links, and request-attempt times used to limit repeated requests. Expired forecasts can remain in this cache and are labelled when displayed. The cache is excluded from device backups and may be removed by the operating system.

Sunfall also contacts Apple to retrieve the required weather attribution image. Opening the weather data-source link connects to Apple's attribution page. Sun and moon calculations continue to run on your device without an internet connection; obtaining new forecasts requires connectivity.

Feedback

The feedback button opens your own mail app with a message addressed to me, pre-filled with the app version and your iOS version so a bug report is useful. You can edit or delete any of that before sending, and nothing is sent unless you send it yourself. Sunfall does not transmit the message; your mail app does.

Notifications

If you turn on the golden hour reminder, the notification is scheduled locally on your device by iOS. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no push service is involved.

Children

The data handling described above applies to everyone using Sunfall, including children. Sunfall has no user accounts, advertising or analytics.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date above.
