Sunfall's main screen in San Francisco: golden hour begins at 6:55 PM, a 24 hour sky ribbon traces the sun and moon, and cards show sunrise at 6:44 AM bearing 82 degrees east, sunset at 7:30 PM bearing 278 degrees west, a 13 percent waning crescent moon, and the morning blue hour and golden hour.

What it does

A 24 hour sky ribbon you drag through time, where the sun's path flows straight into the moon's.
Golden hour and blue hour, morning and evening, with durations.
Rise and set bearings, so you know which way to point the camera, not just when.
The moon: altitude, bearing, phase, how much is lit, moonrise and moonset.
Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight, for the nights you are chasing real darkness.
Any place, any date, shown in that place's own local time.

Sun and moon planning works with no signal

Sun and moon times are computed on your device from the NOAA solar position algorithm and the standard lunar theory. There is no Sunfall server and no account. Searching for a place uses Apple's location services and needs a connection. Calculations for saved places work offline.

Weather-enabled beta builds also request forecasts from Apple Weather. New forecasts need internet access; previously cached forecasts may be available with their update time and an expired-data notice when appropriate. This beta feature is not a claim of availability in the current public App Store version.

The solar engine was validated against an independent reference across ten cities from the equator to Anchorage, and the lunar engine against JPL ephemerides to better than a fiftieth of a degree. Sunfall correctly reports when the sun never rises at all.

Privacy

Sun and moon calculations use your location on your device. Weather-enabled beta builds send your selected place's coordinates, rounded to two decimal places, to Apple Weather. Beta builds with a nearby city or town label also send the current GPS coordinates to Apple's geocoding service while the app is in the foreground; this label lookup is cached only in memory. No analytics, no tracking, no account. Read the privacy policy for network use and local storage details, including differences between versions.
